Out of My Mind
Eleven-year-old Melody has a photographic memory. Her head is like a video camera that is always recording. Always. And there's no delete button. She's the smartest kid in her whole school—but no one knows it. Most people—her teachers and doctors included—don't think she's capable of learning, and up until recently her school days consisted of listening to the same preschool-level alphabet lessons again and again and again. If only she could speak up, if only she could tell people what she thinks and knows . . . but she can't, because Melody can't talk. She can't walk. She can't write. Being stuck inside her head is making Melody go out of her mind—that is, until she discovers something that will allow her to speak for the first time ever. At last Melody has a voice . . . but not everyone around her is ready to hear it. From multiple Coretta Scott King Award winner Sharon M. Draper comes a story full of heartache and hope. Get ready to meet a girl whose voice you'll never, ever forget.

23-year-old man falls to his death at Soldier Field

| UPDATED STORY
By Carlos Sadovi

A man in his 20s died Sunday afternoon after he fell out of Soldier Field and landed on a roof-top on the west side of the stadium, officials said.

The incident happened at about 4:55 p.m. as the Bears and the Eagles were playing, according to Chicago police and Fire Department officials. No one else was injured.

Stuart Haverty, 23, was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital at 5:24 p.m.
Chicago Fire Department Chief Joe Roccasalva said the victim fell about 20 feet and landed on a small rooftop on the west side of the stadium near Lake Shore Drive. He was taken in critical condition to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, officials said.

The fire department required an aerial tower with a basket to get him down, Roccasalva said.

Witnesses told emergency personnel that they saw the man run up to a ledge and jump.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday.

The incident is the second fatal fall in a week at a major sports arena. On Nov. 21 in Los Angeles, a 2-year-old died after plunging 50 feet from a Staples Center luxury suite.

The boy, Lucas Anthony Tang, had been crawling around the suite during the Lakers' game against the Warriors, sources said. At some point, his parents noticed he was missing and began to look for him.

They did not know then that their son, who would have turned 3 in January, had fallen. Witnesses at the game said the boy was moving his arms, legs and head before paramedics took him out on a stretcher.

In this July 17, 28 file photo, Washington Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington. Rhee, the head of the D.C. public school system is expected to announce she is stepping down after a tension-filled, three-year tenure. (AP Photo/Susan Walsh)By forming an education team stacked with charter school leaders, voucher proponents and controversial headline-grabbing education reformer Michelle Rhee, Gov.-elect Rick Scott seemed to signal this week that big changes might be coming to Florida schools.
And they likely won't be popular with teachers or teachers unions.
"I truly believe that there is a move afoot to privatize education in the United States...and it seems that Michelle Rhee is in the vanguard of those people," said Robert Dow, president of the Palm Beach County teachers union. "And I think they're totally wrong."
Rhee, the former chancellor of Washington D.C. schools, is an Ivy-League-educated reformer who became known for a brief, tumultuous reign in what is arguably the nation's worst public school system.
With the blessing of Washington's former mayor, Rhee fired teachers based on student achievement, closed failing schools and championed a new pay system for teachers that promised big monetary rewards for higher test scores but limited teacher tenure.
She stepped down in October after Mayor Adrian Fenty lost his re-election bid.
In an e-mail to the Palm Beach Post today, Rhee said: "I am happy to be of service to Gov.-elect Scott and the State of Florida. When it comes to improving our schools for our children, I will work with Democrats, Republicans, Independents, and people who have general interest in making schools great for our children."
There has been speculation that Rhee might become Florida's next education commissioner, but she told the Washington Post this week that she wouldn't be moving here.
Rhee topped the list of Scott's education transition team, announced late Thursday. Second on the list was Patricia Levesque, executive director of the Foundation for Florida's Future and former deputy chief of staff for education under Gov. Jeb Bush.
Bush, who is chairman of the foundation, implemented one of the most aggressive school overhauls in Florida's history. He championed high-stakes standardized testing, charter schools and voucher programs.
Frank Brogan, chancellor of the state university system and former president of Florida Atlantic University, also is in the group.
The 18-member transition team also includes the owners of charter school companies, superintendent of Hillsborough County schools, chairman of a voucher organization, and university chancellors.
Mark Pudlow, a spokesman for the state teachers union said the Florida Education Association had only this to say via e-mail about Scott's transition team: "We hope that the governor and his team will seek the expertise, experiences and opinions of Florida's teachers, who are the most knowledgeable about what's been going on in Florida's public schools."
The team - Scott's "Champions of Achievement" - includes just one teacher, an online history instructor with Florida Virtual Schools.

lakers vs. mephis (in game coverage)

Lakers 96, Grizzlies 98: Nov. 30 Running Diary

Below is a running diary of L.A.’s road game at Memphis, as the Lakers looked to get back into the win column after back-to-back losses at Utah and vs. Indiana, with some comments drawn from our @LakersReporter Twitter account, and a few more details in case you missed any of the action:
Starters
Lakers: Fisher, Bryant, Artest, Odom and P. Gasol
Grizzlies: M. Conley, X. Henry*, R. Gay, Z. Randolph and M. Gasol
*Henry was starting his third game of the season, with former starter O.J. Mayo being moved to the bench to offer more scoring punch to the second unit.
FIRST QUARTER
6:00 It was all Kobe and Pau in the opening six minutes for L.A., the two All-Stars scoring six points apiece in a 12-11 Lakers lead. This wasn’t necessarily a good thing, however; Phil Jackson had lamented his team’s lack of proper ball movement within the triangle offense in Sunday’s loss to Indiana, and it wasn’t much better early on as L.A.’s only assist came on a Bryant dish to Gasol.
3:00 Sometimes we neglect to notice how well Artest is playing on the defensive end because his offensive contributions have been limited this year, but despite not taking a shot in the first nine minutes, Ron Ron held a hot-all-season Rudy Gay to two points with L.A. leading 21-20.
0:00 Bryant and Gasol got some help from their friends as the quarter wore on, with Fisher nailing two jumpers and Artest and Brown hitting back-to-back driving shots to allow L.A. a 27-all tie out of the first quarter. In unrelated news, Memphis had a bunch of senior citizens perform the “Dougie” dance during intermission, which was admittedly quite enjoyable.
SECOND QUARTER
8:09 One common threat in L.A.’s two straight losses? The previously hot bench trio of Steve Blake, Matt Barnes and Shannon Brown had made only two threes, this after a collective 23 makes in the previous three games. Blake tried to start trending back the other way by knocking one down early in the third, before Bryant added a triple of his own and a driving layup to put L.A. up 37-31 while reaching 16 points.
3:00 Ah, the dilemma of sitting Gasol. Phil Jackson’s been looking to get him more rest than his much-publicized 38-ish minutes per game on the season, but when he subs him out, the Lakers inevitably go into a slide. This time, Memphis ran out for easy buckets as rookie Derrick Caracter gave Gasol a two-minute break, going on a 6-0 run to erase the Lakers’ lead.
0:00 We saw many of the same problems that affected L.A. adversely in its previous two losses in the first half, with too much dependence on Bryant (6-for-16 field goals), too little Lamar Odom (only two field goal attempts), not enough bench help (nine total points) and little relief for Gasol in the paint. Nonetheless, the Lakers trailed by only two points at 51-49, despite turning the ball over nine times to just three from the Grizzlies, who conceded zero points to L.A. off those TO’s. Mike Conley led Memphis with 13 points, frequently either getting or finding himself wide open,
THIRD QUARTER
7:30 A disturbing trend has developed of late for the Lakers in the name of allowing point in the paint. The Grizzlies scored inside on four of six possessions, the other two times getting a wide-open three from Mike Conley and Xavier Henry’s long two, to open a 64-53 advantage, the home team’s biggest lead of the night.
2:15 Struggling considerably from the field (7-for-21 after starting 3-of-6), Bryant got a jumper to fall from the corner to cut the lead to seven before getting his final rest of the game, Brown joining Barnes, Blake, Artest and Gasol
0:21.1 Barnes, on one end keeping up the solid D of Rudy Gay that held Memphis’s top player to 12 points, snuck in for a layup through traffic to cut the Grizzlies lead to five at 70-65 heading into the fourth quarter.

CHEERLEADING IN THE NFL

The job of a Philadelphia Eagles Cheerleader is to be a lady at all times, to be gracious and kind to those she comes into contact with and to support and uphold the impeccable image of the Philadelphia Eagles organization.

Cheerleading in the nba

Auditions for NBA Cheerleaders

Rules vary for every team although in general a woman who wants to try out for one of the NBA cheerleading squads must:
  • Be able to dance: Almost all NBA cheerleaders are dancers.
  • Be 21 years of age: There are generally no height or weight requirements (see below), but you must be 21 in order to try out for a NBA dance squad.
  • Be fit and in shape: The NBA does not require its cheerleaders to maintain a certain weight or height to weight ratio. However, you have to be in shape enough to dance your way through hours of auditions and then rehearsals if you make the squad.
  • Be personable: This is one job where personality counts! You are essentially representing the organization and consequently, there is an interview portion to the auditions.
  • Have good showmanship: One of the things that auditions are judged on is your stage presence.
  • Be a good dancer: This goes without saying that in order to be an NBA Cheerleader, you have to be able to dance since the majority of their job is to perform dance routines.
  • Have a flexible schedule:''' NBA Cheerleaders make appearances and do promotional events in addition to cheering for games.
The auditions for almost all of the NBA teams are posted as webcasts and are held in public venues so that people can watch. On each teams' website there is a spot for you to vote for whichever dancer you'd like to see. Of course, the final announcements are a big promotional event for the team. No doubt, NBA cheerleading takes fan support to a entirely new level.

Nigeria5 - 1

ABUJA, Oct 8 (Reuters) - Nigerian soccer players and fans went home broken-hearted on Saturday after the Super Eagles thrashed Zimbabwe 5-1 but failed to qualify for next year's World Cup finals.

Nigeria, who made it to the last three World Cup finals, were thwarted by Angola who beat Rwanda 1-0 in Kigali. Nigeria and Angola finished with equal points but the Angolans went through on a better head-to-head record against the Nigerians.

"Ah, Angola, Angola! Why have you done this to us?" asked Goodness Diji, throwing her arms up to the heavens and wringing her rain-soaked green-and-white scarf after the final whistle blew.

"The whole team is very very sad. Nobody is happy because we didn't qualify. Even if we'd beaten them (Zimbabwe) 10-0 we would not be happy now," said Nigeria star Nwankwo Kanu.

A sea of fans in green and white cheered and beat drums as their team demolished Zimbabwe in the national stadium in Abuja, but many were frantically sending text messages throughout the match to find out what was happening in Kigali.

Obafemi Martins scored at close range in the 34th minute to put Nigeria 1-0 ahead, and a rumour swept the terraces that Rwanda had scored against Angola, sending Nigeria fans racing around and jumping for joy.

But as word spread that the rumour was untrue, nervous Nigerians bit their nails and some sought divine intervention to keep the Angolans in check.

Adding to the tension, a storm broke out at half-time and the players returned to the pitch in driving rain as thunder and lightning roared and flashed just over the stadium.

A lively second half saw Yusuf Ayila scoring in a scramble after a corner kick in the 50th minute.

Zimbabwe fought back and Benjani Mwaruwari headed in a corner kick in the 70th minute, but Nigeria answered five minutes later with a penalty from Martins and Kanu made it 4-1 with another penalty in the 80th minute.

Then came disaster. Groans of despair filled the terraces as news raced through the crowd of a dramatic late winner by Angola captain Akwa in Kigali.

Fans could not even muster a cheer for Peter Odemwingie when he scored Nigeria's fifth goal in the 90th minute, and the crowd filed quickly out of the stadium in grim silence.

Some mournful fans recalled the Super Eagles' disappointing performances in previous qualifiers, especially against Rwanda who held them to a draw.

"This result will make our boys know their mistakes. They will prepare better next time," said Matthew Chukwudi.

Even the defeated Zimbabweans felt sorry for their tormentors. "They performed so well today, they deserved to go through. I feel very very sorry for them," said Zimbabwe captain Peter Ndlovu.

Chicago Bulls against the Orlando Magic

Both the Orlando Magic and the Chicago Bulls sit atop their respective divisions, making for an intriguing first meeting between two Eastern Conference contenders.

Adding Carlos Boozer to the mix could make the matchup even more enticing.

A broken hand has delayed Boozer's Chicago debut for more than a month, but the two-time All-Star could be in the lineup Wednesday night as the Bulls return home from their lengthy circus trip hoping to deny the Magic a fifth straight win.

Chicago (9-6) missed out on signing LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh but was thrilled to add Boozer, giving the team a proven low-post scorer and Derrick Rose one more option to look for under the hoop.

Boozer, however, tripped over a bag in his apartment prior to the preseason, leaving him with a broken fifth metatarsal and the Bulls without a player who's averaged a career double-double.

Boozer practiced Monday and Tuesday for the first time since suffering the injury Oct. 2. Coach Tom Thibodeau seemed very optimistic Boozer would make his Bulls debut against the Magic (13-4), but the power forward himself wouldn't quite commit.

"I'm going to see how it feels each day," Boozer said Monday. "... Do treatment every day, twice a day, maybe three times a day. We'll see how it feels on Wednesday before the game."

Even if Boozer's debut doesn't come until Friday at Boston, he's not expecting much of an adjustment period with his new teammates.

"(The chemistry) will be right there the moment we step out there together," Boozer said. "We've been talking about it this whole season. People are going to double-team (Rose). He is dominating right now. As soon as they double him, you just try to move to that open area."

Rose missed Friday's 98-97 loss at Denver with a neck injury, but returned with a bang Saturday at Sacramento. The former rookie of the year had 30 points, seven rebounds and seven assists in a 96-85 victory -- his fifth 30-point performance in six games on the trip.

"I think he's the best point guard in the league right now," Luol Deng said after finishing with 22 points. "He can carry us a lot. He makes all of us better players."

Rose will want to be careful when he ventures into the lane against Orlando's Dwight Howard, though. Hard fouls by the two-time defensive player of the year sent Rose out of the Bulls' last two meetings with the Magic, which Orlando won by a combined 49 points.

If Rose can stay on the floor Wednesday, Chicago should feel good about its chances coming off a 4-3 circus trip -- its first winning record on the annual two-week journey since Michael Jordan retired.

The Bulls are 5-1 at the United Center, and they've shown little rust in the first game back from their trip in recent years. Since 2003-04, Chicago is 6-1 in its first post-circus home contest.

That record will be tested Wednesday. Orlando has won four straight, including its past three by 11 points apiece after Tuesday's 90-79 victory against Detroit.

Bears deeply saddened by tragic accident involving fan

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – The Bears released a statement Monday after an accident claimed the life of a 23-year-old man during Sunday’s game at Soldier Field.
The Chicago Tribune reported that Stuart Haverty fell about 35 feet out of Soldier Field, landing on a small rooftop on the west side of the stadium near Lake Shore Drive. The incident reportedly happened at about 4:55 p.m. and the man was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital at 5:24 p.m.
“The Chicago Bears are deeply saddened to hear of the tragic accident that claimed the life of Stuart Haverty yesterday,” the team said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to his family and friends. They will be in our prayers during this difficult time.”

Boozer: Rose is 'amazing'

DEERFIELD, Ill. -- In the midst of the endless questioning as to when Carlos Boozer will actually make his debut for the Bulls, the veteran power forward had some interesting things to share regarding Derrick Rose. No matter when Boozer returns to the floor, he knows whose team it is.

[+] EnlargeRocky Widner/NBAE/Getty Images
Carlos Boozer is expected to make his Bulls' debut in the near future. "It's definitely [Rose's] team," Boozer said. "He's proven that. He's earned that. Worked his butt off. You see how good he is, how great of a season he's had already. [It's] definitely his team."

After spending several months watching Rose every day, Boozer has a new appreciation for just how good the 22-year-old All Star is.

"He's amazing," Boozer said. "I'm really impressed. I knew he was good, and I played against him a couple times. We played against for like a week or two on the 2008 USA team. He was on the select team, the team that we practiced against for a week or two in Vegas. And I was really impressed with how he was playing against [Jason] Kidd, [Deron Williams] and Chris Paul. I knew he was really good, but then you see him every day in practice, you see him in games. The kid has a heart of a champion. He makes play after play after play."

Boozer knows that Rose has had to change his game a little bit without him on the floor.

"Lately, he's been having to shoot a lot, which is more than he'd like to," Boozer said. "We don't want to wear him down, but we needed his points. Or at least his threat on the basket because he's a great penetrator. But, wow ... in one word, all I can say is wow. He's really good."

Obviously, Boozer is looking forward to teaming up with Rose.

"He makes the game easy because if teams are crazy enough to play him one on one he'll have his day," he said. "And then when he gets double teamed, it's four on three behind the ball so it's great when you have a player of that caliber."

Taj is OK: Bulls forward Taj Gibson was back at practice on Tuesday after sitting out Monday because of continued problems with his right ankle. It's the same injury Gibson initially suffered last week during practice at the Staples Center before the Lakers game in Los Angeles.

"It's been real painful the whole time," Gibson said. "But I've just been playing through it. Just been pushing. But doctors came in and said I'm not in danger of hurting myself and further. They just told me [to put] a lot of ice and a lot of treatment [on it]. Coach Tibs understands that and that's what we've been doing."

Gibson and Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau both said he's day-to-day, but is expected to play Wednesday night against the Magic.

The last word: Joakim Noah, on having his own bobblehead. The Bulls are giving away a Noah bobblehead on Wednesday night and Noah got a first-hand look at it after Tuesday's practice.

"You know when you have your own bobblehead, you know things are good," he said
